Weather Watch

January-December 2022 | Kalang, Rosewood and upper Bellinger catchments, NSW, Australia

Severe weather citizen science project.

Piloting since January 2022, this citizen science project monitors and shares rainfall and river height information during extreme weather events and was designed to fill significant gaps in local information during extreme localised rainfall events (rain bombs).

This pilot citizen science program monitors and reports rainfall, river height and road closures during severe weather events, where there is a significant difference between local observations and the Bureau of Meteorology.

Together with local partners, we are establishing a reporting system for information via the Bellingen Weather website. We are developing guidelines and triggers for sever weather alerts through the Neighbourhood Care Network Bush Telegraph and are developing a Severe Weather App & Map that brings all this together.

The next steps are to find resourcing for equipment, training, signage, reporting and ongoing coordination.
